The two topics chosen for this year were “It’s more effective to add environmental tax on carry-out cup than to promote the use of self-carry cup”/ “It’s more effective to promote the use of self-carry cup by offering related benefits from vendors”, and “As a country famous for Information Technology, we shall take responsibility to deal with imported wasted computers”.
The objective of this competition was to enable students with better understanding of environmental issues through the entire process, including preparation, information collection, as well as pros and cons analysis, added with experts’ comments. Meanwhile, during the competition, innovative ideas can be triggered and taken into consideration for shaping environmental policies.
In order to enhance participating rate of colleges and universities, the campus awareness sessions in north, central, south, and east areas were conducted. In those sessions, experts in environment protection field were invited to introduce resource recycling systems among advanced countries as well as Taiwan. Furthermore, the experts also presented how we could incorporate fundamental knowledge with debating theories so as to polish environment protection concepts through debating activity.
In addition, to raise college students’ interests and deepen understanding in environmental protection agenda, this project came up with a number of creative ideas. For instance, well-known fashion models were invited to advertise the concept of resources recycling in the kick-off press conference as a way to increase media exposure. Then, competition rules were slightly modified in accordance with “International Debate Policy” so as to draw audience attention and participation. Furthermore, power point presentation was encouraged to use and experts’ comments were extended for the final round, which was designed to make the competition more professional and academic, aiming to maximize the cognition of key concepts, and help boost the effectiveness of environmental education. And, the last but not the least, in this one-week event, this project also would like to train students, as opinion leaders, to play an active role and expand their influence on peers in terms of environmental protection awareness enhancement in order to establish an everlasting homeland.
